The Scarlet Witch became one of the biggest highlights in the MCU for a reason. Of course, this begs the question, will Scarlet Witch return to the MCU? Here’s what we know so far!

Apart from her astonishing transition from being a vengeful Sokovian who lost her family, to an Avenger, and finally realizing her destiny as the Harbinger of Chaos, Elizabeth Olsen’s performance of Wanda Maximoff has been quite a treat to see on both the small and big screens.

Unfortunately, after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness pulled the trigger and questionably turned her into a full-blown villain which ultimately led to her fatal "death", her status in the billion-dollar franchise remains unknown. That said, will Scarlet Witch return?

You have to realize that no matter how great of a comic book character Wanda Maximoff or the Scarlet Witch is, the power and love for the character also relies on the performance of the actor.

In this case, Elizabeth Olsen didn’t come up short when she stepped up to the plate and granted her role an outstanding portrayal of the Harbinger of Chaos, both in the Avengers films and in her own Disney Plus show, WandaVision.

But as they say, all good things must come to an end one way or another, which goes according to Olsen’s last update this June 2023.

During Olsen’s appearance on Variety’s Actors on Actors series, she was asked about whether she missed playing Wanda in the MCU, and to that, Olsen admitted, “No, I don’t.”

“I think it’s been almost 10 years of playing her. And I’ve loved it. And I think the reason why I am not calling Kevin Feige every day with ideas is because I’m really proud of what we were able to do. I think WandaVision was a really surprising opportunity. If someone were to tell me that I’m fired from Marvel movies, I will feel proud of what we made. And I really am just trying to figure out how to load up other films and characters, so it becomes less about the Marvel of it all.”

It’s worth mentioning that this isn’t the first time the WandaVision star has outrightly denied her MCU return.

In fact, she had been constantly addressing this news ever since her tragic ending in the Doctor Strange sequel. Unfortunately, most of her answers solely rest on Marvel's shoulders, whether they contact her again or not.

In August 2023, Olsen told United Kingdom's The Time newspaper that as much as she loves Scarlet Witch, she wants to focus more on expanding other characters she could play in the industry first:

"Specifically, in the last four years, my output has been Marvel. I don't want... it's not that I don't want to be associated as just this character. But I really feel like I need to be building other parts back up for balance. I so much want to do films right now. And I hope some of them come together in the way I feel like they can. But yeah, that's something that I need. I just need other characters in my life. There's no longevity in one character."

Although this is what she told previously in June, a July interview at TJH Superhero Car Show & Comic Con implied that Olsen would be interested in featuring Scarlet Witch as a part of the X-Men: "I just really wanna figure out the whole mutant thing. [...] I would love to explore [X-Men] so much."

Now, the question is, is there a way for her hero to return to the MCU? If so, how will Scarlet Witch return?

The Scarlet Witch’s story is just beginning, mind you.

If you can recall, Wanda Maximoff’s MCU origins started with losing her family to Stark Industries’ bombings, as shown in her solo series, WandaVision.

She has lost even more of her family along the way, including her twin brother Pietro, the love of her life Vision, and the twins she gave birth to, namely, Billy and Tommy.

You must remember that the MCU is filled with endless possibilities, most especially the evident utilization of the other existences in the Multiverse.

Seeing as reaching her twin sons in the Multiverse was her main goal in the Doctor Strange sequel, the MCU is pretty close to adopting a new chapter from the Scarlet Witch comics onto the small screen.

The next Scarlet Witch story would thrive off of the twins’ reincarnation, Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd, who will take after Wanda’s and Pietro’s powers.

Tommy inherits Pietro’s speed, while Billy takes after his mother as a super-powered Warlock.

A new book titled The Marvel Cinematic Universe - An Official Timeline dropped a major bombshell surrounding the true status of Maximoff, revealing that the former Avenger actually died following the destruction of Mount Wundagore.

A passage from the book (via Scarlet Witch Updates on X), now out in stores reads: "Fall 2024 | 838-Wanda gathers the boys and assures the heartbroken Scarlet Witch they'll be loved. [616-Wanda] destroys Wundagore—and collapses it upon herself—ending two great threats to all of the Multiverse."

Now, that's not to say that this darkens the potential of Scarlet Witch's return to the MCU because, after all, she does have the ability to bring herself back to life.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, there's a good chance we could see her return along with her reincarnated twin boys in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, where the Agatha Harkness spinoff would continue where we left off after the events of WandaVision.
