X-Men '97 titled Mutant Liberation Begins sees to it that Magneto is trying to have the team listen to him as their newly appointed leader by none other than Professor X himself.

Despite being a part of Charles Xavier's last will & testament, Cyclops and the others are having a difficult time listening to their long-running foe. Everyone except Storm, at least.

During the fight in the UN, while Magneto is protecting the people, Storm protects his place and gets shot in his place. Once she loses her powers, all hell breaks loose for Magneto.

He cries as he takes it upon himself to handle the situation by lecturing the government on how they treat mutants so poorly.

Even though he was tempted to "smite them all for what they've done to Storm", he backtracks and declares his new resolve.

Magneto tells the story of how Charles Xavier has long convinced him to see just "how vast the world is versus how small they make it."

Considering that Professor X entrusted his dream to his dear friend, Magneto plans on fulfilling his wish of having a shared world between mutants and humankind.

"I am trying to be better," Magneto tells them, "Please... do not make me let you down."

It is worth mentioning that this is not the first time we get to see Magneto cry in the franchise. However, the way he lets his tears drop shows how much he is hurt by not having the chance to live up to his dream of eradicating bigots from Earth.

Previously in the comic books, we witnessed him cry in pain when he lost Professor X in his arms in Civil War: House of M issue #4.

Because considering that he was murdered, Xavier still urges Magneto to be kind, telling him, "You... are better than that, my friend."

As much as Magneto wants to gain the trust of the X-Men and the world, he will have to work harder than merely sharing the same goal that Professor X had been building in his years.
