The second season of What If...? brought back most fan-favorite MCU characters from the Infinity Saga and Phase Four including members of the Avengers that we've known and loved for many years.

However, one hero that was notably absent throughout the recent second season is Spider-Man, who showed up in the "What If... Zombies!?" episode during the first season.

It is unknown yet why the web-slinger was not part of any episodes of the second season, but fans were hoping that he would show up again and interact with other MCU characters in various what-if situations.

As it turns out, the character was supposed to have his own episode in the recent season.

In an interview with IGN, What If...? head writer A.C. Bradley discussed working on the second season in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and writing the scripts during the lockdown.

She revealed that she penned a Spider-Man episode inspired by Children of Men for the second season that was eventually scrapped.

"It felt like the world was already ending and we didn't need to add to it. And so it became kind of an escape and a fun release," she said.

"However, I did write an episode, which is forever going in a drawer, that was very, very dark. I was calling it ‘Children of Men with Spider-Man.’"

For some fans, it feels like a missed opportunity that the series didn't move forward with a Spider-Man episode although it also sounded like the subject matter and themes might be too dark which is why they didn't push through with it.

Perhaps they'll try to do a Spider-Man episode again in the third season, which is currently in the works, and they can have an opportunity to explore more of him in what-if situations as we've now witnessed a lot of his journey in the MCU.

Marvel Studios is also working on the upcoming animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which is an endless opportunity for them to explore more of Spider-Man in the animated realm and freely since it's not tied with Sony.

All episodes of the second season of What If...? are available to stream on Disney+.
