Toei Animation is one of the oldest anime studios in Japan, though it is mostly known for shonen anime. Recently though, Toei unveiled Girls Band Cry, an upcoming original anime.

The new anime was revealed through the project’s official website and Twitter account.

The reveal also came with a visual that presumably features the anime’s main character.

While there’s not a lot of info about it yet, it’s fair to say that Girls Band Cry is markedly different from Toei’s popular works, which are adaptations of hit shonen manga.

Founded way back in 1948, Toei is one of the oldest anime studios that continue to produce shows and movies today.

Over the decades, many renowned animators and directors have worked for the company, including the likes of Hayao Miyazaki, Leiji Matsumoto, and Isao Takahata, among others.

Currently, the studio is perhaps best known for being the studio behind Dragon Ball.

After all, Dragon Ball is one of the biggest shonen anime worldwide, plus Toei has worked on pretty much all anime projects in the franchise.

Another huge hit for Toei is One Piece, which is arguably on the same level of popularity as Dragon Ball.

Since 1999, Toei has produced over 1,000 episodes and over a dozen movies for the franchise.

Other popular titles from Toei include Slam Dunk, Sailor Moon, and Saint Seiya.

Though Toei has also made original anime works, one of which is Pretty Cure, which is a franchise made alongside Izumi Todo and Bandai.

Now, it seems Toei Animation is flexing its creative muscles a bit more for its new upcoming anime project, Girls Band Cry.

There’s no info yet on the anime’s story, though the announcement does feature the tagline "Toss in your anger, joy, sadness — toss all of it in."

From the looks of it, this anime will be about music and will likely follow a young, possibly high-school-age student guitarist.

Based on the tagline and title, it may have a punk rock vibe.

Of course, it’s still too early to figure out what it is. Though we won’t have to wait long for more info as an animated music video and more details will be released on May 29, 2023.

With music anime shows like Bocchi the Rock! becoming incredibly popular in recent years, it won’t be too surprising to see this next anime from Toei become a big hit.
