During the past few weeks, we've been hearing a lot of casting news for the DCU film Superman: Legacy as it is set to begin production early next year. So far, the fan responses have been enthusiastic as they mostly support the decisions that James Gunn has made in its casting.

One of the casting news that was reported by the trades is Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The actor's involvement has been rumored for months with reports that he initially auditioned for Clark Kent before he was cast as the villain.

However, unlike some of the announcements that were made, Gunn did not comment on Hoult's reported casting and it made some fans wonder whether it is actually confirmed or not.

Now, the director has finally addressed the Lex Luthor casting and confirmed what we already knew.

In his recent post on Instagram, Gunn confirmed that he has cast Hoult to play Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy. He teased that the actor's take on the role will be different from the previous iterations.

"Yes, finally I can answer, @nicholashoult is Lex Luthor in #SupermanLegacy and I couldn’t be happier. We went out to dinner last night to celebrate and discuss how we can create a Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget," he wrote in his caption.

The director also explained that he did not comment when the casting was reported in the trades because the deal was not finalized yet at that point.

"'But, James, we heard this weeks ago, why didn’t you tell us it was true?' Because, although we were discussing it, it wasn’t final until a couple days ago and I don’t want to tell you all something that isn’t certain," Gunn said.

While we already know that Hoult is set to be the DCU's Lex Luthor, it is still great to see a confirmation and acknowledgment from Gunn himself and he sounded very excited about what the actor will bring in the role when we see him in the film.

With a few roles left to be filled, it's interesting to see which more actors will Gunn bring into the fold, especially in key characters such as Perry White and, presumably, Jonathan and Martha Kent and Jor-El.

Superman: Legacy is slated for release in theaters on July 11, 2025.
