One of the strongest foundations of belonging to a community is knowing your spiritual name. This is well illustrated for members of the Inuit community on True Detective: Night Country.

For Trooper Evangeline Navarro, not knowing her Iñupiaq name has been a driver of her journey throughout the show, as strong as her mother's death and her sister's tragic struggle.

Torn between being her sister's keeper and a law enforcement officer, she has struggled to understand her role in the local community. But some form of closure arrives in Night Country's final episode, as Navarro learns her native Iñupiaq name: Siqinnaatchiaq.

According to Inuuqatigiit, the act of naming is an "important institution" in Inuit culture, upheld by the belief that "a person never really dies, their spirit is passed on to a child."

By taking the name of their lost loved one, it helps the family heal and grieve for the past.

In this case, Angie's spiritual name, Siqinnaatchiaq, reconnects her with who she is as a person and with her role in the Iñupiat community.

Navarro learns her Iñupiat name, Siqinnaatchiaq, from her mother's spirit in the True Detective finale.

According to the show's explanation, the name means "the return of the sun after the long darkness", which foreshadows how Trooper Navarro's story will end.

After six long years, Navarro and Detective Liz Danvers solve Annie K's mysterious murder and find out what happened to the Tsalal scientists who kicked off the entire case.

This, along with knowledge of her native name, brings Navarro's character arc full circle and finally affords her closure. But does this mean she dies in the series finale? Fans have their own theories about that apparently-suicidal scene...
