In his recent post on Instagram, Gunn announced that principal photography for the Superman DCU movie has started which also happened to be on the same day as the hero's birthday.

He also revealed that the movie is being retitled to simply as Superman and offered a glimpse on the Superman logo in the new costume.

"Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on Superman today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday," Gunn wrote in his caption.

"When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was Superman. Making our way to you July 2025."

The DCU movie now shares the same title as the groundbreaking 1978 Richard Donner film which was also called Superman.

Last week, Gunn shared a cast photo after conducting a table read which revealed the physical transformation that some of the actors have made in preparation for the movie.

It is unknown yet why the movie's title was changed but it is a sign that they are eager to reintroduce the hero to a new generation and make an impression that it is heavily focused on the Man of Steel.

Superman is slated to release in theaters on July 11, 2025.
