Mary Elizabeth Winstead will soon debut as the live-action Hera Syndulla in Ahsoka and the Birds of Prey actor clearly enjoyed playing the Star Wars Rebels character. Winstead described her experience on the Star Wars series as "a real luxury."
It has been confirmed that Mary Elizabeth Winstead will play Hera Syndulla after several months of speculation on her Ahsoka role. While speaking to the Dagobah Dispatch podcast, Winstead admitted that she was glad to play someone who already has an established backstory.
"Having a character who's already existed and has such a rich history on something like Rebels, as an actor, it's incredible," she said.
"Because sometimes we're tasked with creating our own backstories or trying to flesh out a character that doesn't really have that much on the page," Winstead continued.
"And so to play a character that has season after season of storylines and complex histories with everyone in their life and relationships and experiences was really something I've never experienced quite like that..."
Winstead then credited Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni for making things easier for her. "To have Rebels to refer to, and to have [Filoni] to speak to about it every day on set, was a real luxury for sure," she said.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead also shared her thoughts on Hera as a character and teased at what fans can expect in Ahsoka.
"I see Hera as an incredibly strong but complicated person," Winstead said. "She is very maternal, but also she's this leader of this crew."
She continued, "And as we see, she continues and becomes a general. And so she's leading quite a lot of people and she's become something of a legend in her own right."
Ahsoka will also star Rosario Dawson, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Eman Esfandi, Ray Stevenson, Ivanna Sakhno, Hayden Christensen, and Lars Mikkelsen. The Star Wars series will premiere on Disney+ in August 2023.
