What's up with the flamingos in Leave the World Behind? How did they end up in the pool?

Archie's teeth falling out and the appearance of the White Lion oil tanker aren't the only weird things happening in Netflix's Leave the World Behind. This also includes animals popping out of nowhere in the film.

The first person to catch the animals acting weird in the Netflix film is Rose Sandford (Farrah Mackenzie) when she realizes how the deer suddenly multiplies in the backyard of their summer house.

But it wasn't the only scene with wild animals popping out of nowhere. The flamingos had their scene-stealing moment, too. Now, the question is, what were the flamingos doing in Long Island?

The explanation behind the animals being out of sorts in the film was explained in a brief broadcast warning. When Clay goes out to town, the car radio says:

"We're now getting reports that the fallout from the ongoing cyber attack has led to a catastrophic environmental disaster in the south, impacting animal migration patterns."

While the film doesn't explain how exactly the animals are being affected, the deer and the flamingos most likely had to vacate their location after the oil spilled when the White Lion washed ashore.

It is also worth mentioning that the deer and flamingos' change of scenery in Leave the World Behind potentially implies that the world is rapidly changing in ways that are out of their control during the cyber attack.

Apart from the bug that bit Archie and the ending where a large group of deer surrounded Amanda and Ruth in the woods, the film director Sam Esmail breaks down that the deer had a tricky purpose to serve in the story, as he explained on Netflix Tudum:

"To turn [deer] into this sort of ominous, menacing, almost warning — I thought was really interesting," Esmail said, "That's the trick about this movie. We always tried to take the things that we never really considered a threat and then turn it around on them."

In Rumaan Alam's novel, there were even supposed to be white deers, which would have made Leave the World Behind even more ominous of a film than it already is.

Still, the message comes across clearly to viewers on how the environmental factors impacted the nature of these creatures.
