Satirical post-apocalyptic disaster movies are no longer new, especially on Netflix, so it's only natural to find parallels between some of their storylines. Considering that Greta Gerwig had White Noise in 2022, here's why fans think Leave the World Behind has similarities with the former.

Leave the World Behind Shares Similarities with Another Satirical Disaster Movie

Christmas isn't always meant to be celebrated through spreading holiday cheers and sometimes, viewers prefer to sink their teeth into thriller flicks.

Netflix recently released Leave the World Behind boasting the powerhouse cast of Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, and Kevin Bacon. The film depicts a satirical take on how racism and classism play their roles even in a post-apocalyptic world.

While the film is performing well on the streamer, fans couldn't help but take notice of just how similar Leave the World Behind is to another satirical disaster movie. And that movie is Greta Gerwig's White Noise film, which was released just last year.

Not only do both films share one streaming platform and thematical storylines, but they also revolve around a main family navigating the story. And of course, the obscure open ending.

Not to mention, the two films are also based on original novels, with Leave the World Behind being based on Rumaan Alam's book, and White Noise coming from Don DeLillo's.

Some fans have even taken their views on comparing the two films as part of the 'pre-programming' or 'predictive programming' theory. You can check out some of the posts on X (formerly Twitter) below:

What Does 'Predictive Programming' Mean?

Fans couldn't help but compare Leave the World Behind and White Noise as part of the collective 'predictive programming'.

It's a theory on how the government is using the media to control the minds of the masses into thinking that upcoming natural calamities and such are 'planned future events'.

But it is worth mentioning that this is a groundless theory, which has yet to be proven true. There is no denying that the film releases have coincidental predictabilities.

How Similar is White Noise to the Newest Netflix Film?

Overall, the two films do share a couple of thematic schemes in their storytelling, specifically with how families tend to act during disasters.

The only difference is that Sam Esmail had a more sinister approach, as compared to Greta Gerwig's more comedic take on disaster films.

Leave the World Behind's official synopsis reads:

A family's vacation is upended when two strangers arrive at night, seeking refuge from a cyberattack that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in a collapsing world.

While White Noise movie's plot description reads:

White Noise dramatizes a contemporary American family's attempts to deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life while grappling with the universal mysteries of love, death, and the possibility of happiness in an uncertain world.
