Frieren fans who can’t get enough of the series’ world and characters are in for a treat. That’s because a Frieren prequel light novel has been announced with an April release date.
This light novel isn’t just a different take on the main story though. Instead, it will include a collection of short stories that have not been told in the manga or anime.
What should make it even more exciting is that the light novel will feature a new story starring the fan-favorite character, Aura the Guillotine.
Aura the Guillotine and More Are Back in the Frieren Prequel Novel
This new Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End light novel was announced on the publisher Shogakukan’s official website. Its cover may not have been revealed yet, but some story details were shared.
In this prequel novel, there will be five short stories that will follow Frieren, Fern, Stark, Kanne and Lawine, and Aura the Guillotine.
It’s not clear when exactly in the timeline these stories will take place, but what’s certain is that they happened before Frieren went on her current journey to get to know people better.
There’s no doubt that the Aura short story will be what many fans will be excited about. After all, even if her anime appearance wasn’t long, Aura made a huge impression on fans, enough that she continues to get fanart.
The Kanne and Lawine story will also be exciting as these two have a hilarious dynamic as seen in the First Class Mage Exam arc.
Of course, the main trio of Frieren, Fern, and Stark will also have their own short stories. It’ll be interesting to see what these new stories will reveal about them.

Frieren Prequel Light Novel Release Date Announced
Instead of series co-creator Kanehito Yamada, Mei Hachimoku is writing this novel. Hachimoku is the author of the popular light novel The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes, which got an anime film adaptation.
As it’s a light novel, it will likely also feature new illustrations, though the Shogakukan listing for the novel did not mention an illustrator for the manga. Chances are that more info about this will be revealed soon.
What the listing did confirm is that the Frieren prequel light novel will be released in Japan on April 17, 2024. It will be priced at 880 JPY (around 6 USD) and will have 224 pages.
There’s no word yet on an English release date for this novel, though given its popularity, it will likely get a release from Viz Media later this year or by 2025.
