How Many Mages Have Defeated Frieren?
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is set decades after the Demon King’s defeat. Given that the Demon King was defeated by Himmel’s party, it’s fair to say that Frieren is one of, if not the most powerful mage in the world.
Despite her incredible magical abilities, Frieren shared during the First-Class Mage Exam arc that she has been beaten before by other magic users with less mana than her.
This is quite surprising given the feats that Frieren has shown so far, but it goes to show how power isn’t the only thing important in a battle.
In Frieren’s words, there have been 11 magic users with less mana who have defeated her. Of the ones that defeated her, four are demons, six are humans, and one is an elf.
Who Defeated Frieren So Far? All Confirmed Characters
One of the confirmed characters who defeated Frieren is Qual, one of the Demon King’s generals.
As revealed in episode 3, Qual created Zoltraak, or Killing Magic, which has become the foundation of the modern magic system.
Himmel’s party faced off against Qual during their journey, though Qual proved to be too powerful. Thus, Frieren sealed him instead.
While Frieren was able to seal him, she was unable to properly beat him until decades after.
The manga’s story reveals another demon that defeated Frieren before. This demon is named Macht, the most powerful of the Demon King’s Seven Sages of Destruction.
There is some debate regarding Macht given that some fans don’t think he has less mana than Frieren. What is confirmed is that Frieren was soundly defeated, at least during their initial fight.

The Mages and Demons That Beat Frieren: The Best Fan Theories
It’s fair to say that Frieren’s biggest weakness is a mimic chest. Given that she always gets stuck in one, it’s fair to say that she has lost countless times to them.
On a more serious note, fans believe that Flamme and Serie have beaten Frieren before. Flamme would make sense given that she was Frieren’s teacher.
Meanwhile, there’s debate about Serie given that many fans think that she has more mana than Frieren.
Finally, fans think that Fern can beat Frieren, at least in the future. This is because Fern was key in defeating the perfect clone Frieren during the First-Class Mage Exam.
