How Important Is the First-Class Mage Exam in Frieren?

The First-Class Mage Exam takes place once every three years. It is administered by the Continental Magic Association, headed by the powerful elven mage, Serie.

Test takers should be a fifth-grade mage or higher to participate in the exams, except Frieren, who was allowed to register thanks to Lernen, who recognized her holy emblem.

Frieren and Fern decided to take the First-Class Mage Exam to enter the Northern Plateau.

Frieren’s party needs a mage with a first-class certification since the Northern Plateau is a dangerous region full of cunning magic-using monsters.

There are three stages that Frieren and Fern need to pass during the First-Class Mage Exam.

The first stage is proctored by Genau, who split all 57 examinees into 19 parties, each having three members. They need to capture a bird called Stille, and all the members of the party should be present by the end of the exam.

Sense, on the other hand, is in charge of the second exam. Those who pass the first stage should traverse the dungeon of the Ruins of the King’s Tomb and reach its center by the next day.

The final exam’s proctor is Serie, who judges the aspiring mages based on their reaction to her and her mana, as well as their desire, personality, and belief in magic.

Surprisingly, it was only Fern who passed the First-Class Mage Exam. She passed with flying colors and was even offered an exclusive apprenticeship under Serie after she was able to spot the latter’s unstable mana.

On the contrary, Frieren was able to pass two of the exam’s stages but failed the last one.

As it turns out, Serie is adamant about not giving Frieren her first-class mage certification, even though she’s stronger than any of the test takers.

Sadly, Serie doesn’t share the same beliefs as Frieren toward the use of magic.

In addition, Serie even banned Frieren entry to any facility owned by the Continental Magic Association for a thousand years! Yikes!

Denken, Land, Ubel, Wirbel, and Methode also passed the exams. The rest of the third exam takers didn't pass, including Laufen, Dunst, Kanne, Scharf, and Ehre, in ways only Serie can explain.
