Who Is Wirbel in Frieren?
Wirbel is a second-class mage who was widely regarded for his skills as the Northern Magic Corps’ captain and has fought against the remnants of the Demon King’s forces for a very long time.
The Northern Magic Corps are mercenaries who specialize in fighting demons, but in times of need, they are mobilized to fight wars between nations, which means Wirbel’s hands are drenched in both children's blood and women’s blood.
Still, Wirbel wants to remain human by not killing his opponents and giving them mercy.
In the past, Wirbel has always killed everyone he had to, but before doing that, there’s always a delay in his actions to provide hesitation on his part.
Wirbel claims that he couldn’t risk his life for kindness, saying that people like him fight for their desires even though some think his kindness is his reason to fight demons.
At such a young age, Wirbel fell in love with an unidentified girl who left his hometown. Before she could leave, Wirbel promised her that he would eradicate all the demons in their village so that she’d return to him one day.
How Strong Is Wirbel in Frieren?
Ehre, one of Wirbel’s party members during the first stage of the exams, describes Wirbel’s magic as devoid of character because he’s capable of using underhanded ways for the sole purpose of winning.
True enough, Wirbel is willing to ambush Fern’s party and steal their Stille to pass the first stage of the exams.
Wirbel fought Ubel, who was known for killing a first-class mage back in the day.
He was able to overpower Ubel, even though the latter could use such dangerous magic. Ubel even thinks that Wirbel is holding his powers back in order not to kill her.
In Frieren Episode 20, Wirbel showed Ubel a powerful binding spell called Sorganeil. This binding spell prevented Ubel from moving and even controlled her mana.
His spell binds those he can see, so as long as he keeps looking at Ubel, she won’t be able to move, and he could easily kill her in her current state.
The drawback of this binding spell is that Wirbel can’t use it on multiple targets. He should also see his target’s entire body to completely immobilize them.
