The story of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End deviates from the usual fantasy, adventure, and isekai anime, where the protagonists are on a quest to defeat a Demon King or Demon Lord to save the world.
Instead, Frieren’s plot kicks off after a group of adventurers defeats the Demon King. They have been together for 10 years, and now their lives stretch beyond their original purpose.
They promised to meet again after a century in the hopes that they could all watch the so-called Era Meteor Shower, which happens only once every 50 years.
The group of adventurers disbands and moves on with their respective lives.
The near-immortal elven mage Frieren pursues her thirst for magic; the alcoholic priest Heiter moves to Holy City; the dwarven warrior Eisen returns home; and the hero Himmel retires.
Fifty years later, Frieren returns to reunite with the hero Himmel, who has significantly gotten older.
He doesn’t have the strength and composure he had before, and in the eyes of Frieren, he has become decrepit.
Frieren also reunites with her other former allies to watch the meteor shower together.
Noticeably, only Frieren’s appearance didn’t change. It doesn’t bother her a bit, but seeing her comrades submit to old age and illnesses greatly impacted her.
Now, Frieren plans to continue acquiring magic and getting to know humans better. She also wants to retrace the steps she took with Himmel and the others as much as possible before memories of them fade away.
With Heiter’s orphan, Fern, Frieren goes from one place to another to learn more magic, seal demons, kill dragons, and more!
Along the way, they encounter Eisen's disciple, Stark, who becomes their vanguard and joins them on their journey toward Aureole, where Flamme and Himmel's spirits rest.
From one village to another, Frieren's party grows not only in terms of combat prowess but also in their appreciation of the importance of time, human life, and more.
It will be a deplorable but fun journey as long as they are all together! But will Frieren be able to understand humans and their way of life better?
