Who Is Barem in Chainsaw Man?
Barem is a young man who lives a symbiotic existence with the Flamethrower Devil. In his hybrid status, he's quite similar to Denji, who merged with Pochita to become Chainsaw Man.
Little is known about his past or how he turned into a Hybrid. We would suspect that he either turned willingly to work for Public Safety or transformed in circumstances similar to Denji's, which caused Makima to recruit him for her evil plans.
Chainsaw Man: Denji, Barem, and the Hybrids' History
During the Public Safety arc of the shounen manga, Barem was a minor antagonist who fought against the Chainsaw Devil along with other Hybrids.
It is later revealed that all of them were under Makima's control, and her destruction returned their free will to them.
In Chainsaw Man Part 2, Barem and the other Hybrids, including the Bow Hybrid and the Sword Hybrid joined the Chainsaw Man Church.
Barem and the other Hybrids initially seem friendly toward Denji in their Part 2 reappearance.
Their manners suggest that they're grateful to Chainsaw Man for freeing them from a life of mind control under Makima's thumb.
However, things soon turn complicated when the Chainsaw Man Church dissolves and its association with the Fire Devil becomes clear.
What Are Barem's Plans for Denji?
The latest Chainsaw Man manga chapters reveal that Barem and the other Hybrids are obsessed with Chainsaw Man and don't respect Denji for who he is.
Barem's plan is to turn Denji into Chainsaw Man by any means necessary. This goes against Denji's promise to Yoshida not to transform again for Nayuta's safety.
When the horde of Chainsaw Man-like Devils created by the Fire Devil doesn't convince Denji to fight, Barem goes for more desperate measures.
Realizing that Denji is serious about leading a normal life, Barem goes to his house and burns it down, presumably killing Denji and Nayuta's pets.
This has the intended effect as a chainsaw grows from Denji's chest, slicing Barem.
So far, the reason Barem is going to such lengths to break Denji isn't clear. Fans theorize that, for some reason, the Flamethrower Hybrid is looking to sabotage Fami's plans.
The Nostradamus Prophecy suggests that the War Devil, rather than Chainsaw Man, will prevent the apocalypse, hence Fami wants to reduce Denji's powers.
Denji's transformation will likely hinder Fami's plan, and Barem seems to want that.
Hopefully, future chapters will further explain his reasoning — if he survives Denji's wrath.
