We learned on The Rise of Skywalker that, somehow, Palpatine survived his presumed death at the end of Return of the Jedi and he was working behind the scenes throughout the decades prior to this comeback.

His return in the final film of the Skywalker Saga was controversial amongst fans as it opened a lot of issues and loopholes between the events of the original trilogy and sequel trilogy and it changed our perception of the ending of Return of the Jedi given what we know happened afterward.

Now, the current live-action shows that are set within the "MandoVerse" are currently addressing the aftermath of the original trilogy and the eventual downfall of the New Republic leading to the sequel trilogy.

It is their way of addressing the gaps and potentially giving us a more sensible explanation of what we will eventually see at the beginning of the sequel trilogy and the reemergence of Palpatine.

In the recent seventh episode of Ahsoka, while traveling with the Noti community in the deserted areas of Peridea, Ezra Bridger was catching up with Sabine Wren on the events that he missed out on throughout his exile including the defeat of the Empire as portrayed in Return of the Jedi.

When Ezra asked whether Emperor Palpatine died in the battle, Sabine gave a cheeky response, "That's what people say."

This is simply their way of poking fun at Palpatine's presumed death at the end of the original trilogy since we know that, eventually, he will rise again in a few decades and we will also meet his granddaughter Rey, who becomes a Jedi.

Obviously, the people in the galaxy around that time thought that Palpatine was permanently dead and the New Republic was heading the new government that reversed the tyrannical efforts that the Empire made.

It also reminded us that there are a lot of set-ups that Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau have to do in order to properly establish the events that will lead to the sequel trilogy and poking fun at Palpatine's presumed death might be a way for them to subtly address it for now.

However, there is a much closer threat that our heroes have to face first since Grand Admiral Thrawn is about to embark on his planned comeback to the main galaxy which will likely lead to the beginning of the fall of the New Republic.

New episodes of Ahsoka premiere every Tuesday night on Disney+.
