What exactly is wrong with Alice in Constellation? What's happening between her and her mother, Jo, who has just returned from a doomed space mission? Apple TV’s latest sci-fi show, Constellation, loves to play with the uncanny and has so far left fans with a million questions.

The first three episodes of Apple TV's new sci-fi series premiered today, February 21 and, even though it’s still early into the series’ run, its time and reality-bending nature is giving theorists a run for their money.

Spoiler warning: There are spoilers for Constellation Episodes 1-3 in this article.

To fully grasp what happened to Alice, it’s important to know what Jo is going through so far.

As revealed in the first three episodes, Jo is an astronaut who has returned to Earth after a disaster struck the International Space Station (ISS). Jo makes it back to Earth, though things are off upon her return.

The new Apple TV show’s timeline can be a bit confusing as it jumps around without warning. What’s clear though is that the first episode shows Jo alongside her daughter Alice in a winter cabin.

This part of the story is set weeks after Jo's return from her doomed mission, and it seems to be set in the present day. Flashing back to her time on the space station, Jo is shown warmly chatting with Alice over video call.

Shifting to the cabin again, it seems that something is wrong with Alice. Constellation has not made it clear yet what happened to her, but based on the initial episodes, this seems to be one of the show’s biggest mysteries.

The Alice that Jo is with in the cabin seems to be a bit more guarded and harsh towards her mother. At one point, Alice even remarks how her mom and dad are having marital issues.

Soon, things take a turn as Jo starts seeing Alice all over the cabin and the first episode ends abruptly with a half-frozen Alice.

Episode 2 opens with Jo setting up a warm bath for Alice, but Jo then spots Alice safe and sound in her bed. As she looks back to the bath, she sees the other Alice gone.

Jo also notes that the Alice in bed has no smell, while the Alice in the bath has the usual scent she remembers on her daughter. Thus, Jo starts searching the cabin for what she thinks is her real daughter.

The third episode saw Henry talk about quantum superposition where the same thing can exist in two different states or positions at once. This might connect to what is wrong with Alice.

Following this line of thinking, one possible Constellation theory is that Jo is seeing two versions of Alice from different worlds. Thus, Alice may have found herself between two different versions of her world.

Of course, it’s still too early to tell if this theory is correct. There’s also the fact that the show still has a lot more mysteries to unpack.

Here’s hoping then that the next episodes of Constellation will reveal more of what’s really going on – with Alice, with Jo and with Henry's theory.
