Apple TV is releasing a new original this February. This time, we follow Jo Ericsson (Noomi Rapace), a Swedish astronaut who works with the European Space Agency and ends up returning to Earth on the edge of insanity.

Upon landing back, Jo's head is filled with visions and time distortions, as though she is being pulled between the past and present when she is talking to her daughter over the tablet.

You can check out the official synopsis for Constellation below:

An astronaut returns to Earth after a disaster in space — only to discover that key pieces of her life seem to be missing. The action-packed space adventure is an exploration of the dark edges of human psychology, and one woman's desperate quest to expose the truth about the hidden history of space travel and recover all that she has lost.

But what does this mean for the series? Does this mean that Constellation is possibly based on a true story? Can it happen in real life? Well, here's the full story, according to the showrunner.

Is Constellation Based on a True Story?

While the story about a quantum physicist prioritizing the mysterious experimental device over the lives of the astronauts aboard the ship is quite fictional, some "spooky" realistic elements were combined into the original series, too.

The Constellation show creator Peter Harness said that before he made the show, he was aware of the spooky stories about what astronauts go through in space.

The showrunner added that astronauts would "hear dogs barking, sometimes see weird things outside the capsules" to set a few examples.

"Obviously, that's a sci-fi show, but that has spooky elements in it as well," Harness explained during the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena (via TV Guide), "And that leads almost naturally into a conspiracy about this factor being covered up."

While it remains to be seen what other spine-chilling elements we can expect from the series, we'll have to wait and watch Apple TV's new original Constellation as it premieres Wednesday, February 21.
