It was a souvenir Kyle got from a family friend who came back from a trip. Kyle heard that the oni are scary demons from Japan, which is true in the country's folklore.

By the end of the first episode, Higan brings out another oni mask, but this time, it covers his face except for the eyes.

It looks like a Mempo mask worn during combat or training to protect the user’s identity and prevent enemy capture.

As the plot unfolds, Higan wears the oni mask while killing the many ninjas who are after his life.

The mask adds to Higan’s intimidating appearance as if he’s an oni who will use his anger and rage to bring pain and destruction to everyone who opposes him.
