The first season of the series unveiled the first of the three amplifiers: Morozova's Stag. Now, all there are revealed to the world as Shadow and Bone Season 2 introduces the last two: the Sea Whip, and the Firebird.

The three amplifiers are the key to understand the lore and how Alina would be able to eradicate the Shadow Fold being the myth coming to life, the Sun Summoner. But first, what are amplifiers, where are they from, and how do these three work?

The infamous Ilya Morozova, one of the first ever known Grishas, was the source of amplifiers. Morozova found a way to increase the powers of a Grisha because at that time, Grishas are prone to persecution from those who do not have abilities.

Ilya Morozova is known as the "Bonesmith," because he uses his finger bones and merzost to make amplifiers. His own bloodline is an amplifier, thus, Baghra, and Kirigan, are also amplifiers other than the three animals that Morozova resurrected.

Morozova's beasts were first thought to be myths but as the Sun Summoner came into existence, a search for these creatures started. When fused with a Grisha, the Grisha's abilities become more powerful than ever and the Grisha gets to see the last memories of the amplifier.

The First Amplifier in Shadow and Bone: Morozova's Stag

The first season of Shadow and Bone heavily dealt with the quest to find the Stag and Kirigan is the one who looked for it. The stag is said to have formed part of "the making of the heart of the world," the very source of all the powers of Grishas.

The stag is a benevolent being, and Alina was fused with the antlers of the stag which came out of her clavicles. As for Kirigan, he got a small piece of it on his hand so he could control the powers of Alina. Alina, thankfully, removed most of it on Kirigan but some residue remained.

Given that these amplifiers were resurrected by Morozova through his bones and merzost, Kirigan used merzost to amplify himself more, thus, being able to extend the Fold's coverage and create his nichevo'ya, but it comes with a price -- it's like an infection taking over his body.

The Second Amplifier in Shadow and Bone: The Sea Whip

A sea monster and the second of Morozova's beasts, the Sea Whip is the fabled ice dragon which resides in a cave within a remote island. A tracker, Mal hears its frequency and with the help of Sturmhond, who turned out to be Tsarevich Nikolai, they were able to track the Sea Whip.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 presented the Sea Whip in a terrifying way. The title of the episode is "Rusalye" as a way of paying homage to the backstory of the Sea Whip in the books where Rusalye is a cursed dragon prince with a tragic tale.

With the threat on Mal's life, Alina kills the Sea Whip, breaking her own orders to capture it alive. When fused into her, Alina gets an embedded bracelet when its scales are put into her wrists. Alina pulsates in power when she received it.

The Third Amplifier in Shadow and Bone: The Firebird

First thought to be a bird, the quest to find the Firebird proved to be the hardest of all. When Baghra escaped with Genya from the base of Kirigan, Baghra revealed that it is not a bird but a bloodline, one that Mal Oretsev belonged to, thus, Mal is the Firebird.

Much to the surprise of everyone, after learning about Mal being the Firebird, they thought of ways on how to amplify Alina and eradicate the Shadow Fold while making sure Mal survives because clearly, Mal and Alina are in love, much like star-crossed lovers.

How Did Mal Become The Firebird in Shadow and Bone Season 2?

See, from the start, Mal had no idea of his lineage, only that when he was young, he wandered off and arrived at an orphanage which "felt like home." When Baghra, Alina, and Mal went to the lair of Morozova, Baghra revealed to Mal his true history.

Mal is a Morozova. When Baghra was little, her sister was resurrected by Morozova using his bones and merzost. As Baghra explained, the Firebird is the bloodline of her sister and through generations, it passed down until Mal.

Mal is an impeccable tracker, and when he came in contact with the other amplifiers, he hears their frequency because he, himself, is one. That is also the exact reason why he went into the orphanage where Alina was, despite passing by three orphanages.

Mal and Alina were destined to meet because their purpose in life are intertwined -- one being the Sun Summoner and the other being an amplifier. Despite being together for most of their lives, Mal was only able to amplify Alina once he knew that he was a Morozova.

In the end, Mal and Alina knew what to do. Alina was able to bring down the Shadow Fold with the last amplifier dying in her arms. With the help of Nina, Alina used merzost to bring back Mal to life and after fulfilling his purpose, he now searches for a new one as Sturmhond.
