My Life with the Walter Boys is premiering on Netflix this week. Consisting of ten episodes, we get to see how Jackie Howards adjusts to her new life from living in New York to moving in with the Walters after the tragic death of her parents.

The official synopsis for My Life with the Walter Boys reads:

After losing her family in a tragic accident, 15-year-old Jackie is forced to leave her privileged Manhattan life and move in with a large, boisterous family in rural Colorado, where she becomes entangled in a love triangle between two brothers.

In the novel, Will Walter happens to be the eldest of the bunch and doesn't live with his family anymore. His character is a 21-year-old college student in his final semester, who is engaged to his high school sweetheart.

Upon the character's introduction in the series, there was no mention of Will's hearing aid when Katherine Walter introduced him to Jackie, which brings us back to the question, is Will deaf or hard of hearing? Netflix Tudum wrote:

Will is the eldest Walter sibling, and he helps to show Jackie the ropes in the Walter household. Will is hard of hearing (since birth), as is Link, and wears hearing aids. A recent college graduate, he now works in real estate with his fiancée, Hayley.

Is Will Walter Hard of Hearing in the Novel?

In the Ali Novak book, Will Walter wasn't depicted as someone hard of hearing, nor did he use any hearing aid so it comes as a surprise how Netflix decided to make this change to his character.

However, Will still shares the same traits as his book counterpart. There was a bit in the original novel where Jackie went all the way to Will's apartment to warn him that one of his brothers, Nathan, had a seizure and had to be taken to the hospital.

When Jackie explained that the hospital told them Nathan had epilepsy, Will was distraught, thinking his 14-year-old brother would be too young to have one.

During the incident, Will showed empathy for Jackie. When she told him she froze at the sight of the hospital, Will immediately understood that it was because she was reminded of her family's tragic accident.

It remains to be seen why Will Walter is deaf in Netflix's My Life with the Walter Boys series, a complete contrast to his character in the book. But we'll be sure to give you an update once it starts airing tomorrow.
