Venom 2 Director Reveals Original Title for the Sequel

When it was announced that the title for the Venom sequel is Venom: Let There Be Carnage, fans were amused because it is fitting to the film's wacky tone and it emphasizes Carnage's bigger role in the story. But apparently, that wasn't supposed to be the title and there was one that they considered that is based on a hit 1980 song.

Speaking to Collider, Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis revealed that there was another title that they considered before they settled on "Let There Be Carnage." It turns out that the sequel was, at one point, going to be titled Venom: Love Will Tear Us Apart, which is inspired by the hit 1980 Joy Division song. The director said, "We did think for a moment it might be called 'Love Will Tear Us Apart,' that was a going concern for a little while. But 'Let There Be Carnage' just seems to do it. There wasn't a lot of fighting over the other titles we were thinking of. Because this was such a strong contender."

Serkis also indicated in the interview that the title Venom: Lethal Protector, which would be based on the popular 1993 six-issue comic book featuring Eddie Brock/Venom, wasn't in contention as they were thinking of a title for the sequel.

If you think about it, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" would have also been a good title for the sequel especially since Hardy has been calling it a "love story" and the people who have seen it pointed out that, besides the face-off with Carnage, the film also focused on the relationship between Eddie Brock and Venom. But then "Let There Be Carnage" is definitely a better title from a marketing standpoint and suitable for a comic book movie. It also emphasizes the rise of Carnage and hints at the wild journey that the audience is about to take.
