As Tsukimichi season 2 continues, some fans who can’t wait to find out what happens next are no doubt curious about its source material. As there are two versions of the novel, here is a quick rundown of the Tsukimichi light novel vs web novel.
Similar to many isekai light novels, Tsukimichi began as a web novel series, though it has since gotten several adaptations. In total, there are four versions of the story.
All Versions of Tsukimichi, Explained
Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy is an isekai series by Kei Azumi, and it began as a web novel that was initially published on the Shosetsuka ni Naro self-publishing website back in 2012.
In 2016, the web novel was moved to the AlphaPolis website. That’s because AlphaPolis began publishing the series as a light novel back in 2013.
Even though the series began over a decade ago, both the web novel and light novel versions of it continue to get new chapters.
While popular, it’s fair to say that the series is more popular around the world in its anime and manga versions.
The Tsukimichi anime's first season aired in the summer 2021 season and was produced by C2C (of Shangri-La Frontier fame).
After much anticipation, the show got a second season by J.C.Staff (of One-Punch Man season 2), which premiered in January 2024.
Along with the anime, there’s also the Tsukimichi manga series that began back in 2015. Similar to the novels, AlphaPolis also publishes the manga.

Tsukimichi Light Novel vs Web Novel: Similarities and Differences
Technically, the Tsukimichi web novel is the original version of the story, meaning isekai purists may prefer to read this version.
For those who want the most fleshed-out version of the story though, the light novel is the way to go. Even though it is behind the web novel’s story, it features more details and fleshes out more characters.
Aside from these small changes, the Tsukimichi web novel and light novel’s stories are pretty much the same. This means fans won’t miss out on story details whichever version they choose to read.

Where to Read the Tsukimichi Web Novel and Light Novel
The manga and anime are officially released in English outside of Japan. That is not the case with the web novel though, as only unofficial fan translations are available.
As for the light novel, Hanashi Media licensed the series earlier this month, meaning the Tsukimichi light novel volume 1 will finally get an official English release digitally on March 30, 2024.
