The Mandalorian Star Compares the Experience of Starring in Star Wars vs. Marvel

It’s not uncommon for actors to sometimes star in two major franchises at the same time. Although when they happen, fans can’t help but ask what it's like working on both. Aside from the fact that they both came from popular franchises, The Mandalorian and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania have nothing in common.

Katy O'Brian is one of the few actors who has starred in both Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with her appearance as freedom fighter leader Jentorra in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania weeks after her appearance as Imperial Officer Elia Kane in The Mandalorian.

In an interview with Inverse, the actress detailed her experience of how different it is to film for Star Wars and Marvel.

“They're both very secretive. I would say Star Wars is on the slightly more secretive side. The scenes that I've done in Star Wars have been more contained. We have either the volume, which is a very small semi-circular area, or we have practical sets, but again, they're very small.” said O'Brian.

Given that not all actors get to star in both franchises, let alone in one, O'Brian felt proud and pressured to be a “franchise baby”.

“It’s so cool. Like I said, there's a lot of overlap in a weird way. You kind of feel like a franchise baby in a way cuz you're like, okay, I'm in the 20th rendition of both of these projects. But it's also something that I grew up watching. I would watch Marvel Saturday morning cartoons, I'd read some comics, and obviously, everybody knows Star Wars, so it's kind of like walking into a familiar universe in a weird way.” she said.

O'Brian added, “But also, you’re trying to make your own name in that and somehow fit in that and feel like you don't have massive imposter syndrome by being there. But it's an honor, it's really fun, and it doesn't feel real.”

Before her Mandalorian stint and Ant-Man 3 appearance, O'Brian had already appeared as Kimball in several episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Mandalorian seasons 1 to 3 are streaming on Disney+ while Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania debuts on the platform on May 17.
