Lucasfilm Pushes Andor to Be Bold and Mature Despite the Limited Seasons

Star Wars is no doubt a successful franchise. Despite its accomplishments, its offerings are not always guaranteed to boom just like that. When Andor premiered in 2022, the fans and even its stars were doubtful it would triumph.

Showrunner Tony Gilroy originally intended to make five seasons of the series, each covering one year leading up to Rogue One. But upon realizing that the quantity would compromise the quality, they trimmed the arcs to fit only two seasons.

Season 2 is currently underway, and lead star Diego Luna recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to reminisce about the show’s first season and how production went to greater lengths for stronger storytelling.

“We managed to make the series we made because we took the time we took. The thought of making five seasons, I would probably be 54 and still doing this. So it’d be impossible to pretend to be the guy before Rogue One for such a long time and to be honest, it’s such an intense journey. It’s fantastic, but it’s so intense. And so it’s great to know that we can give everything to it, and by the end, still have something else to give to other projects and life.” he explained.

The actor also said that he was grateful to be given a lot of freedom on how to approach his character and also praised the writing in the post-credits scene in season 1.

“One of the many things that the show has is very patient writing. There are great ideas that come with patience. So it’s very mature writing, and that was one of those reveals where you were like, ‘Shit, that’s so smart.'” remarked Luna.

The Narcos star also weighed in on the feeling that they were doing something wrong because the show's direction and production were too perfect, to begin with.

He also commended Gilroy, Disney, Lucasfilm, and Kathleen Kennedy for being so involved in the project.

“We had the freedom and the support of Disney and Lucas[film]. We had the confidence of Kathy [Kennedy] behind the show … Tony will sit down with the production designer [Luke Hull], and he’ll say, ‘Okay, what is the logic of that room? Where are the windows?’ ... So that is something special,” he narrated.

Season 1 of Andor is streaming on Disney+.
