People have huge expectations when it comes to The Last of Us Season 2. After all, the second season will be based on the game sequel to the 2013 Naughty Dog title.
However, it looks like The Last of Us Season 2 will change things up for the HBO series. Co-showrunner Neil Druckmann has just admitted that they are considering a major change to a pivotal scene from The Last of Us Part II.
In The Last of Us Part II, Joel tries to reconnect with Ellie by singing the song Future Days by Pearl Jam to her. It's an important moment for the two and the song itself has turned into an icon for the video game.
Although we would all love to hear Pedro Pascal perform a cover of Future Days in The Last of Us Season 2, Neil Druckmann has admitted that they are considering changing the song since it would be impossible for Joel to know the song in the first place.
“I could tell you we haven’t made a decision. We have talked about it for those exact reasons that you mentioned, that now it makes no sense for Joel to know that song,” Druckmann told Kinda Funny.
Future Days is featured in Pearl Jam's tenth studio album Lightning Bolt which was released in 2013. Since the show already confirmed that the cordyceps apocalypse happened in 2007, there is no way that the band would have produced the song in the series' timeline.
Neil Druckmann continued by pointing out that there are easy ways to explain how Future Days still managed to be released in the Last of Us Universe. However, he and his team are leaning towards making the big change.
“Now we could say, ‘Okay, it’s a parallel dimension and the song came out earlier.’ There’s ways, but that feels a little bit like a cheat. I will say that Pearl Jam specifically has now like even more so been ingrained into the world of The Last of Us, that if we don’t do that song, well, there’s other songs we could play with,” he said.
