Despite receiving a polarizing critical reception, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace remains to have a special place for many fans of the franchise due to the nostalgia and its impact on the new generation when it was released.

It was also lauded for its revolutionary visual effects technology that George Lucas innovated just like in the original 1977 film and it became the highest-grossing film of 1999.

Now, to celebrate its 25th anniversary this year, fans will be able to revisit the film in the way it is meant to be.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace to Re-Release In Theaters This May

Empire Magazine has revealed that Lucasfilm is re-releasing Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in theaters for a limited time this May 3, just in time for the May the 4th weekend.

It is part of the film's 25th anniversary celebration. A new poster by artist Matt Ferguson was also released. You can check it here:

It is unknown yet whether the re-release will feature new footage or exclusive special features, but at the very least, fans will be able to revisit the film on the big screen again and relieve the experience just like 25 years ago.

There is no doubt that this is exciting for prequel trilogy fans, especially now that the film has received reassessment throughout the years and it has a special spot now for the fandom.

Recently, we've seen alumni from the prequel trilogy make their return in recent Star Wars releases such as Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen, who both starred together again in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Aside from announcing the film's re-release, Empire has also unveiled exclusive interviews with the cast members of the film and revisited their experiences making the landmark entry in the Star Wars franchise.

It is likely that that there will be more special announcements and releases in the coming months to celebrate the anniversary and it is exciting to see what else Lucasfilm has in store.
