Liam Neeson Admits Jar Jar Binks Backlash Hurt Him; Offers Praise for Ahmed Best

It goes without saying that Jar Jar Binks is still the most despised character in Star Wars and over two decades since he debuted, he remains quite polarizing. Of course, Lucasfilm didn't expect him to be as divisive as he came to be when he first burst into the scene.

The Jar Jar backlash was so intense, that it ended up becoming detrimental to actor Ahmed Best. Now, his prequel trilogy co-star Liam Neeson is opening up about the hate both the character and actor had to deal with.

Star Wars: Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor Felt Hurt Over Jar Jar Binks Backlash

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine which celebrates 25 years of the prequel trilogy, the Qui-Gon Jinn actor talked about the backlash Ahmed Best received for his portrayal of Jar Jar and how it affected him.

Admittedly, the Star Wars icon along with co-star Ewan McGregor didn't take too kindly to the negativity thrown at Best, considering he was a delight to work with. Neeson said: "Ahmed was so funny and inventive. Myself and Ewan were personally hurt and offended by the critical reaction to the character."

Thankfully, Best was given a second shot, and this time around, his performance as Kelleran Beq, the Jedi responsible for Grogu's Order 66 salvation was lauded by fans. The actor even said he'd love to reprise the role in a future project and given how well-received his performance was, it wouldn't be too farfetched to think we'll see him back.

As for Jar Jar, there's always a strong chance that the divisive Gungan could make appearances in the franchise, especially considering we've seen Star Wars revisit the prequel trilogy through shows like Ahsoka and The Mandalorian. Hopefully though, fans aren't as pressed when that happens.
