Star Trek: Picard Potential Spinoff Receives Promising Update from Season 3 Showrunner

While the final episode of Star Trek: Picard gave us a satisfying sendoff for The Next Generation crew, it also planted some seeds for a potential spinoff with Captain Seven of Nine leading the USS Enterprise-G starship.

Ever since the episode's release, a lot of fans online have been clamoring for a new series with Seven of Nine's adventure as a captain. Showrunner Terry Matalas even suggested that the potential spinoff could be titled Star Trek: Legacy although he warned that the project is not in development at the moment.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, Matalas was asked about his thoughts regarding the fans' petition on the spinoff series where he expressed a gracious response on the wide interest that the idea has garnered amongst Trekkies.

"Oh, it's flattering. I mean, it's very flattering. I love Star Trek. That's lovely. That's very lovely to hear," he said.

However, when asked about whether the potential spinoff will actually happen, the showrunner cautioned that no final decision has been made yet, but he encouraged the fans to keep on clamoring for the series as he believes that it could turn into reality if the voices become louder.

"You know, there’s conversations happening all the time. I think Alex [Kurtzman] has a plan for the Star Trek universe and I think he has to figure out how all these things play out, right? I don’t think he wants to rush into anything," Matalas said.

"He’s got two great [live-action] shows happening right now, Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy, and the Section 31 movie. So, you know, they’re pretty well stocked."

He continued, "At the same time, I think there’s a demand for this. I would say the fans should be loud and tell the world what they want. And maybe one day we’ll be able to do it…The fans are heard, but they should keep doing their thing."

It is great to hear that there are actual conversations regarding the spinoff series. While nothing is definitive at the moment, this is still a promising sign for fans who have been clamoring for it to happen and we might still expect good news regarding it in the coming months.

For now, let's just wait and see for more news and updates on whether Star Trek: Legacy will indeed happen, and, hopefully, the key creatives from the third season of Picard will also be involved if it does move forward.
