Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Showrunner Shoots Down the Idea of Killing Off Jean-Luc

The final episode of Star Trek: Picard delivered the promise of giving The Next Generation crew the sendoff that they deserve. The gang's last mission ended with a happy ending as they were able to defeat the Borg once and for all and none of the characters perished during the battle.

In the weeks leading up to the finale, there are fans who speculated that the series will end up with a death of a main character in the vein of The Wrath of Khan with some even theorizing that it will be Jean-Luc Picard who is going to bite the dust.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, third-season showrunner Terry Matalas revealed that killing off Picard was never an option when they were writing the final episode since they already did it during the first season finale.

"It wasn't on the table for me. Picard already died in Season 1. Maybe if he had not, it would have been something to consider," he said.

"But, it also was a story about a man who saved his son by connecting to him. And it would be like, yeah, he connects to his son, then dies. It wouldn't feel the greatest."

Matalas also explained that he always intended for The Next Generation reunion to have a happy ending and evoke the poker scene that was done in the last scene of the original series.

He added, "I wanted to end with that poker game, and I wanted to end with a sense of joy of The Next Generation family reuniting together. So, no, that's, that's not my particular bag. I really wanted this to feel like a joyous reunion and that the future was bright for the last generation and the next."

It was really delightful to see that the final episode ended with no major deaths and The Next Generation crew still have a bright future ahead after their final mission together. It also makes sense that Picard wasn't killed off since it would be too repetitive storytelling-wise.

Besides giving the characters the happy ending that they deserve, they also set up a potential spinoff with Seven of Nine finally becoming a captain and leading the new Enterprise-G ship alongside the Titan crew that we met during the entire last season.
