Lots of big anime announcements were made at Jump Festa 2023 this weekend, and among them is the new Spy x Family movie which will be released next year featuring an original story by series creator Tatsuya Endo.
Specifically, at the event’s Spy x Family stage, Season 2 of the anime was confirmed alongside the reveal of a new anime original movie.
While a second season announcement was inevitable given the show’s success, a new movie announced this early is something most fans were surprised to see.
Spy x Family Season 2
It’s fair to say that Spy x Family is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) anime shows of the year in terms of popularity and views.
Since the first cour began in April of this year, the series has continued to be one of the most-streamed anime in streaming charts.
Given the show’s success, a second-season announcement was something that fans were expecting heading into Jump Festa.
But the Season 2 premiere next year is a bit unexpected given that other shows have longer gaps between seasons.
Unlike the upcoming movie which will feature an original story, Spy x Family Season 2 will adapt Tatsuya Endo’s Shonen Jump+ manga.
While the source material began back in 2019, it has yet to reach 100 chapters given its bi-weekly release schedule.
Despite this, the manga should have enough material for a two-cour Season 2.
Though there’s currently no info yet on how long Season 2 will be, nor is there word on an expected release date.

Spy x Family Movie Original Story
Aside from the second season, an upcoming Spy x Family anime movie was revealed, and it will not be based on the manga.
While some fans thought that the manga’s Great Cruise Adventure arc is the perfect length for a movie, it was decided that the film will instead have an original story that will be written by Tatsuya Endo.
Typically, anime movies with original stories are non-canon, though given that Spy x Family’s story unfolds over a long period, there’s a chance that a side story for a movie can be considered canon.
Currently, there’s no info yet on story details as well as a release date for the movie. It’s also not yet confirmed whether Wit Studio and CloverWorks will be back to animate these new anime projects.
Though the announcement did come with a key visual that features Loid, Yor, Anya, and Bond on a plane.
Given this, the movie should take place during or after Season 2 as Bond Forger is in the new visual.
