Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse failed to take home any trophies at last night's 2024 Golden Globes ceremony. The fan-beloved sequel was nominated in the categories Best Animated Feature Film, Original Score, and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron took home the Best Animated Feature Film prize while Oppenheimer won in the Original Score category. Barbie, which was 2023's highest-grossing film, nabbed the inaugural Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award.

The Spider-Man sequel was considered a shoe-in for Best Animated Feature Film after months of praise from critics and audiences alike. However, the Miyazaki movie prevailed and it became the legendary director's first-ever Golden Globe win.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse cast and crew were in attendance last night to represent the team, with Shemaik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, and Daniel Kaluuya even presenting at one of the categories during the ceremony.

Fans of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse took to social media to express their disappointment to the film's losses in all the categories for which it was nominated.

As expected, they were sad to see the sequel lose Best Animated Feature Film since it was one of the best-rated movies from last year and considered to be the frontrunner in the category. With a 94% audience score and critics praising its "stunning animation, unforgettable characters, and complex themes," it's safe to say hopes were dashed last night.

Some fans also noted that the Best Animated Feature race at the Oscars is more competitive now with The Boy and the Heron's surprise win at the Golden Globes.

It is interesting to see how the Animated Feature race will fare well in the coming weeks now that both films have established their frontrunner status and it's clear now that either of them could win at the Oscars.

What made it more competitive is that both of them have a history with The Academy since Into the Spider-Verse won the prize in the 2019 ceremony while Miyazaki's Spirited Away also prevailed more than 20 years ago, which makes him overdue now to win again.

Unlike the last few years, this year's race is expected to be more competitive than ever and it would also be curious to see which films win in this category at future ceremonies such as the Critics' Choice and BAFTA.
