Let's make one thing clear right off the bat: Rebel Moon is not Sofia Boutella's first starring role in a sci-fi adventure film. But the Zack Snyder space epic is certainly her biggest role to date. So, who does Sofia Boutella play in Rebel Moon and where have you seen her from before?
What is Sofia Boutella Known For?
Before becoming part of Rebel Moon, Sofia Boutella played smaller roles in movies such as Street Dance 2, Monsters: Dark Continent, the Kingsman franchise, Tiger Raid, and even Atomic Blonde.
During the early stages of her blossoming Hollywood career, she had already starred alongside the likes of Nicolas Cage in Prisoners of the Ghostland, Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde, Tom Cruise in The Mummy, as well as with Michael B. Jordan in Fahrenheit 451.
But arguably one of the biggest projects she's been involved in before Rebel Moon was 2016's Star Trek Beyond where she played Jayla. Jayla was a new alien character in the franchise who helped the crew in taking down the big bad, Krall.
Let's just say that performing risky stunts isn't a new department for Boutella to explore, which is exactly why she fits perfectly to lead Zack Snyder's two-part flick.

Sofia Boutella Leads Star Wars-inspired Flick
Starring as the main character, Kora, she leaves the farmers of Veldt to defend the land by fighting back against the Imperium she wished to run away from.
In an attempt to protect the farmers' crops and their peaceful village, Kora gathers the warriors necessary to protect Veldt as she leads the people to victory.
As for why Zack Snyder cast Boutella in the lead, the director told Tudum: "I pitched her from the beginning. That happens to me with casting. I'll see someone and be like, 'I'm going to put them in a movie. I'm going to figure it out.' [Sofia] has this mysterious quality. She's super physical. Her performance is amazing."
Meanwhile, the official Rebel Moon synopsis reads:
After crash landing on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a stranger with a mysterious past, begins a new life among a peaceful settlement of farmers. But she soon becomes their only hope for survival when the tyrannical Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and his cruel emissary, Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein), discover the farmers have unwittingly sold their crops to the Bloodaxes (Cleopatra Coleman and Ray Fisher) — leaders of a fierce group of insurgents hunted by the Motherworld.
