For those who haven’t seen the iconic 90s basketball anime yet or for fans who want to rewatch it, here’s some good news. Toei Animation announced that the original Slam Dunk anime is now streaming for free on YouTube.

Toei announced the anime’s free streaming release just recently, and it was revealed that it will get a staggered release schedule.

This means that the first few episodes are out now, and the rest will be released in the coming weeks.

Slam Dunk getting a free release is right on time, especially with the series getting a huge boost in popularity recently.

For anime fans who grew up in the 90s, Slam Dunk is no doubt a beloved series.

It’s fair to say that Takehiko Inoue’s original manga and the subsequent Toei anime were big influences in the world of both anime and basketball.

While it’s still beloved by many, Slam Dunk hasn’t really been talked about in the past years given that there were no new projects. That was until last year when The First Slam Dunk was released.

The new movie is directed by Takehiko Inoue, and it is a follow-up to the original 90s anime.

When it was released late last year in Japan and select Asian countries, it caused a huge boom in popularity for Slam Dunk.

Soon, the film will be released in North American cinemas, and to further hype it up, Toei decided to release the OG anime for free.

Toei Animation announced the release via its official Twitter account. There, it was revealed that the first 10 episodes will be available to stream on YouTube starting July 19 at 5:00 PM PST.

Now, the first 10 episodes are available, albeit only in the US and other selected regions.

As for the rest of the episodes, Toei stated that they will be releasing more new episodes every week until the entire series is available.

While great for 90s anime fans, it’s also recommended for new fans. After all, The First Slam Dunk’s events are set after the anime.

It’s perfectly fine to watch standalone, but watching the original anime will give a better experience.

With the original getting a YouTube release for free, it’ll be interesting to see if there will be more Slam Dunk anime projects in the future, especially given the series’ renewed popularity.
