The beginning of Secret Invasion started with a shocking twist as they revealed that Martin Freeman's Everett K. Ross has been a Skrull all along.

As a result, fans have been wondering about how long a Skrull has been impersonating the character, especially since he recently just appeared in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and it opened up some questions on whether he was already a Skrull during the film's events.

So far, the series has not addressed the fate of the real Everett K. Ross and it is unknown yet whether Freeman will show up again later on to reveal what happened.

In an interview with Collider, Freeman shared his thoughts regarding the twist surrounding his MCU character at the beginning of Secret Invasion and explained that he didn't play Ross as someone who is impersonated by a Skrull in Wakanda Forever.

"No, we had a conversation about it. Put it this way, I wasn't playing anything in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a Skrull," he said.

"I wasn't thinking, 'I'm a Skrull,' Secret Invasion and Wakanda Forever were definitely overlapping, chronologically, but I was never given a full definitive party line about, 'This is the Gospel truth now.'"

The Emmy winner also added that he doesn't believe the notion that Ross has always been a Skrull and is adamant that he is not interested in playing that aspect of the character.

"I don't wanna play Ross as Skrull. I don't wanna believe he's been a Skrull this whole time, so I don't. That's not what I've played. I've believed, all the time, in Ross's integrity, actually. I really enjoy playing Ross, as a Skrull or otherwise," he continued.

"I've enjoyed playing him as an organic human man, so I don't wanna lose him to Skrulldom. So, no, Ross, for me, is not a Skrull. But I was forewarned before seeing a script and I was like, 'Huh? What the fuck?!' Because then, you have to retrofit everything you've done and everything the audience thinks."

Freeman added, "As someone said, when Duke Ellington died, 'If I don't want to believe it, I just won't believe it. It's not true, if I don't believe it.' So, I'm just gonna go with my own thing. I've played him as a human, so that's what I believe."

It is understandable to hear Freeman's rejection of his character's surprising twist and perhaps he is right that the Skrull's impersonation of Ross might have been short-term.

For now, let's just wait and see how it will all unfold and, who knows, maybe we will be able to find out the truth by the final episode where they will presumably address most of the questions that they set up.
