In the video game-like world of Scott Pilgrim, the titular character first meets Ramona in a dream, as her job involves the use of sub-space portals.

Their first meeting in Scott's waking life happens a little later, during a party hosted by Julie, a secondary character whose social events bring many characters together.

While this initial meeting proves awkward, Scott orders something from Amazon.ca, knowing that Ramona is a delivery girl, in hopes of seeing her again.

After a few more encounters, Scott is challenged by Matthew, one of Ramona's 'seven evil exes.'

By the end of Chapter 1 of the graphic novel series, Ramona agrees to become Scott's girlfriend if he defeats her remaining evil exes.

The early details of Scott and Ramona's first encounter made the relationship turn sour for some fans from the get-go, as they interpret Ramona as a manic pixie dream (literary) girl.

This trope refers to a female love interest who is only there to give meaning to the male protagonist, making his life fun and colorful.

Ramona's bright dyed hair and overall aesthetic aid this impression. This is particularly noticeable in the live-action movie, which condenses the source material into two hours.

She does have more of an arc in the light novel, and the Netflix series will hopefully be similar.

Scott and Ramona do end up together in the graphic novel series. However, they go through a lot of adventures first, and the decision to try and make their relationship work isn't easy.

Until the fifth volume of the graphic novel series, Scott is doing a good job at defeating Ramona's exes.

Things get complicated when Ramona discovers that Scott is cheating on Knives, his 17-year-old girlfriend, with her.

While the realization makes her angry, Ramona recognizes that she had cheated in the past, and the two decide to make their relationship work.

By the end, the two have reaffirmed their love for each other as they better understand what being a good romantic partner looks like.

Both Scott and Ramona made mistakes, and some fans even think that if each ended up alone, it would have been a more powerful ending.

Of course, this is supposed to be a light-hearted story inspired by game levels and mechanics.

Deep inside, you know from the beginning that the main couple is getting together one way or the other.

While the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off anime couldn't end without Scott and Ramona ending up together, the Netflix adaptation went for a more complicated approach.

This time, Scott doesn't simply fight evil exes. He must also face his older self, who will try to sabotage him in a way that will feel relatable to everyone who has ever feared adulting and change.

Eventually, Ramona saves the day, and Scott resolves to become better than the older self he meets.
