Samuel L. Jackson Admits He's Still Furious About Nick Fury's Absence in Captain America: Civil War

Samuel L. Jackson has been playing MCU's Nick Fury for more than a decade. Aside from starting the Avengers initiative, Fury was also proven valuable after helping the Earth's mightiest heroes countless times when they most needed it. However, Jackson recently revealed his frustration over his exclusion in one of the MCU's most remarkable films, Captain America: Civil War, wherein Iron-Man and Captain America goes against each other.

Jackson sat guest in The Hollywood Reporter's Roundtable segment. Together with fellow MCU stars Oscar Isaac, Michael Keaton, and Tom Hiddleston, the conversation transitioned to missed opportunities and regrets about their roles in the mega-franchise. Particularly for Jackson, the clash between Captain America and Iron Man was his biggest miss.

"A down moment for you is an up moment. But all those things are there and you have an opportunity to do it, and they give you that leeway to feel your way into that, Once they see you and know who you are, that gives everybody an opportunity to come and bring a personality," Jackson explained. "That was the thing about the Avengers movies, they all had different personalities and they were able to blossom once we got through the initial film. The initial film was to introduce these people to who they are and these are the things they can do. Now, this is how they interact and they’re not all nice. And I fussed at them, I still fuss at them, about Civil War because I'm like, 'How could the kids fight and Nick Fury not show up?' Like, 'What's going on here? Everybody go to your room.' But they didn’t need me for that. They did, but they didn't."

In all fairness, Captain America: Civil War is indeed a missed opportunity for Nick Fury to appear as the bigger man and to reconcile Steve Rogers and Tony Stark. After all, Fury is the man behind the Avengers initiative and the Earth’s mightiest heroes wouldn't even prosper without his existence.

It's also hard not to wonder how Jackson's Nick Fury was absent in a massive Avengers event, considering how the character nearly appeared in every major Avenger film like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man: Far From Home. If ever Fury was there, he could’ve easily intervened Iron-Man and Captain America's chaotic brawl.

Samuel L. Jackson's latest outing as Nick Fury will be on Disney+'s Secret Invasion, rumored to premiere sometime in 2022.
