As with many anime series, I'm in Love with the Villainess had a life before it arrived on our screens. The anime adapts a light novel and manga series that is really popular amongst yuri fans.
I'm in Love with the Villainess: A Different Kind of Narou Isekai
I'm in Love with the Villainess, like many popular isekai anime of the last few years, was originally a web novel series published on Shousetsuka ni Narou.
The web novel was first published in 2018 before being acquired and published in light novel format in 2019.
While the web and light novels have finished, a spin-off telling the story from Claire's perspective – She's so Cheeky for a Commoner! – is ongoing.
A manga adaptation of the light novel series has been published in the monthly magazine Comic Yuri Hime since 2020 and is ongoing.
There is also a cooking spin-off released to promote the anime (I'm in Love with the Villainess: Maid's Kitchen) and even a Korean webtoon adaptation!
Where to Read the I'm in Love with the Villainess Novels
There is currently nowhere online where you can read the I'm in Love with the Villainess novels in English legally.
Unfortunately, this is the case with many light novels. Unlike manga, which regularly have legal – and often free – options like Shonen Jump or Manga Up, light novels usually have to be purchased individually.
Thankfully, the Villainess light novel series is very widely available. If you want to read the books, you'll need to purchase a copy of each volume, which can be done at most major online bookstores including Amazon, Google Play, Apple Books, and more.
You can also head over to the official website of Seven Seas Entertainment for different options. Interestingly, two volumes of the light novels are also available as audiobooks, so it's up to you to pick your poison!
The original web novel has never been officially released in English. However, it is still available to read on Narou in Japanese.
Where to Read the I'm in Love with the Villainess Manga
Unfortunately, the Villainess manga is in a similar situation to the light novels. As it's published by Ichijinsha and not one of the major manga publishers – Shuiesha, Kodansha, Square Enix etc. – the manga cannot be read on any of the legal manga apps available in the US.
Fans who want to read the I'm in Love with the Villainess manga will need to purchase physical or digital copies. As with the novels, the manga is widely available in most major online bookstores.
I would urge all fans to purchase copies of I'm in Love with the Villainess if they like the series, as it's a crucial part of fans supporting smaller creators to tell special stories that we otherwise wouldn't be able to see!
