Anime Expo 2022 saw lots of major anime reveals and announcements. Among the highlights of the event is the reveal of Panty and Stocking Season 2 by Studio Trigger.
At the Studio Trigger panel during this year’s Anime Expo, the second season of the Gainax cult anime series was announced.
There, the anime’s staff showed a teaser video for the series, along with the words “NEW PANTY & STOCKING” (via Crunchyroll)
The first season is officially entitled Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, and it is a 13-episode show which aired from October to December 2010. The first season was animated by Gainax, the historic animation studio that created iconic works such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Nadia: Secret of the Blue Water, and FLCL.
The first Panty and Stocking season was directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, one of the co-founders of Studio Trigger, and the director of Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill.
As Imaishi directed the original, it makes sense that Panty and Stocking Season 2 is being worked on by Studio Trigger.
While Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt shares similar style elements with Imaishi’s other works, the series stands out as a unique project in large part because of its art style.
Panty and Stocking’s art style looks more like a Western animated show instead of having a more anime look. The show’s story is also crasser than Gainax’s other work.
The series’ story follows the Anarchy sisters, Panty and Stocking, angels who are kicked out of heaven because of their bad behavior. As punishment for their deeds, Panty and Stocking are sent to Daten City, a place on the border of heaven and hell.
The two are taken under the wing of reverend Garterbelt, and they are tasked with defending Daten City from evil spirits called Ghosts that attack it.
The sisters fight Ghosts with their ability to turn their lingerie into weapons. By beating Ghosts, they earn Heaven Coins which they can use to return to heaven. But because they are impulsive and easily distracted, their road back to heaven is not an easy one.
While season 2 is official, Studio Trigger has not yet revealed more information about it. Currently, the teaser video that was shown at Anime Expo has not yet been published online.
There’s also no information yet on when the next season of the series will air, nor is there word on how many episodes it will have.
