Who Is Miwa in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Kasumi Miwa is a supporting character in Jujutsu Kaisen. She's a Year 2 student at Kyoto Jujutsu High.
In Season 1, she's seen clerking for Principal Yoshinobu and gets to take a picture with Gojo.
During the Goodwill arc, she fights Maki Zenin, before getting a call from Mechamaru and being put to sleep by Inumaki.
While she doesn't have much page and screen time during the Shibuya Incident arc, she is among the members of the Kyoto team who ambush Pseudo-Geto.
In this battle, Miwa gives, quite literally, everything she has, with fans theorizing that she made the ultimate sacrifice through a binding vow.
What Is a Binding Vow?
Binding vows are a key concept in jujutsu society. Essentially, they are a pact that becomes binding via cursed energy. They can be formed individually, or with another sorcerer.
While binding vows often require great sacrifice, the consequences of breaking them are far worse than the terms imposed upon creating them.
Miwa's JJK Binding Vow Theory Explained
In Chapter 134 of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, Miwa faces Pseudo-Geto. Thinking of everything that led to her becoming a katana-wielding jujutsu sorcerer, she makes a possibly devastating choice.
Getting behind Pseudo-Geto, she prepares to unleash her New Shadow Style: Batto Sword Drawing attack with maximum strength, thinking that she is willing to put her all even if it means she can never wield a katana again.
Unfortunately, Pseudo-Geto destroys her sword with his bare hands.
Due to the emotional weight of Miwa's words, fans have since theorized that Miwa vowed never to use a katana again, in exchange for achieving her strongest possible attack against Pseudo-Geto.
Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 244 seems to confirm this, several months after fans first came up with the theory.
What Are the Consequences of Miwa's Binding Vow?
It seems that Miwa's binding vow will exclude her from the final battle against Sukuna.
In Chapter 244 of Jujutsu Kaisen, we're treated to a flashback of the sorcerers convening to decide on a course of action against Sukuna.
Since this is an endgame battle, almost everyone is expected to participate. However, it is pointed out that those unable to make an opening and likely to die instantly should only participate in the end, as a final resort.
It is finally confirmed that Miwa's declaration that she wouldn't use a katana again was, indeed, a binding vow.
While Miwa still has cursed energy, her katana used to be her primary weapon, and losing it puts her future as a jujutsu sorcerer at stake.
With the Jujutsu Kaisen manga reportedly ending, Miwa might yet have a role to play, but she is unlikely to fight in the forefront any time soon.
What's more, her vow will likely prevent her from pursuing her goal of becoming a jujutsu sorcerer unless she learns to channel her energy differently.
