MAPPA is no stranger to CG animation as the studio has worked on Attack on Titan: The Final Season which used 3D animation for its titan scenes. The studio also made Dorohedoro which was a fully 3DCG animated show.

It’s fair to say that Chainsaw Man might be their best use of CG yet as the series featured lots of big action scenes that were praised by fans.

The fight between Denji and Katana Man was singled out by fans for being a gorgeously animated fight, especially the parts on the train.

Of course, there were purists who disliked the CG scenes, with some calling them stiff and unnatural.

But for the most part, viewers were impressed by these 3DCG moments, especially as they allow more creative angles compared to 2D animation.

Despite the criticisms, most fans still praised how well the 3DCG blended with the 2D animated sequences.

Though in order to pull this off, staff members had to put a lot of effort into the production.

As revealed by cgworld.jp, the main goal for the CGI team was to match the 3D sequences to the 2D animation as well as possible.

To do this, the animators had to put a lot of work into the textures, as well as the rigging to make everything look natural.

The amount of work and effort can be seen in the recent behind-the-scenes screenshots and models, some of which you can see here:

Upon seeing these, fans on Reddit were thoroughly impressed with the work that was made, with many expressing their admiration for the show’s staff as well as their excitement for the next season.

Currently, there’s no word yet on Chainsaw Man Season 2. Though many are expecting an announcement to come at MAPPA’s upcoming stage event this May.
