The new Sony's Spider-Man Universe film Madame Web is finally arriving in theaters this week. It is a milestone for the franchise since it is the first entry that is being led by an all-female team of superheroes.

However, the early reviews and reactions have already been negative and comparable to the reception that Morbius also received. Some of the criticisms were made toward its writing, pacing, and the characters' lack of appeal.

Prior to the release, the film had already been a subject of ridicule as a line from the trailer became a meme sensation. There are also rumors that the story was originally set in the '90s before it was changed to 2003.

In an interview with TheWrap, Dakota Johnson revealed that the Madame Web script had drastic changes after she signed on to the project.

She also wasn't sure what the original story was when she joined the film, but the version that she signed on wasn't the one that made it in the final cut that is releasing this week.

"There were drastic changes. And I can’t even tell you what they were," she said with a laugh.

This could explain the final results that the film eventually had and the reception that it's been receiving since it's clear that the project was totally different in its inception.

Perhaps Johnson decided to join the project because there was promising material in the script that she read and it changed massively the longer the process went.

It is interesting to see now how the audience reception and box office performance will fare well in the coming days following the negative reviews that it's been receiving.

If the film's financial results fail spectacularly, it could be a wake-up call for Sony and reassess their plans for the live-action universe since the numbers are telling that the general audience has no investment in the franchise.

Madame Web is now showing in theaters everywhere.
