Lord of the Rings: Rejected Young Aragorn Series was Pitched by the Russo Brothers

There is little doubt that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is an exhilarating and eye-opening show but there was a time when the idea for the series was only an idea that had to battle it out with several other pitches. Showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne have opened up about working on the LOTR prequel and it has been revealed that the rejected plan for a Third Age series following young Aragorn was actually pitched by the Russo brothers!

People know about the planned Lord of the Rings series that would focus on the young Aragorn, who was played by Viggo Mortensen in the Peter Jackson films. However, the pitch didn't get picked up and Amazon went with McKay and Payne's show that is set in the Second Age.

Although we know about the young Aragorn series, it hasn't been revealed who had pitched it in the first place. Luckily, The Hollywood Reporter's new feature on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has confirmed that the idea came from Joe and Anthony Russo.

According to the report, an insider shared that the Russo brothers wanted to work on a series set in the Third Age that would follow “an Aragorn story.” The Russos were only two of dozens of writers, producers and directors who were interviewed by Amazon executives.

We're disappointed that there won't be an Aragorn spin-off but fans are still hoping that there is room for another Lord of the Rings series in the future. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.

The title for the next episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has not yet been revealed. Episode 7 will premiere on Amazon on Friday, October 7, 2022.
