Kevin Smith Gives James Gunn Funny Advice on What Not to Include in Superman: Legacy

James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy is still two years away, but rumors and demands from fans and even the director’s friends see no end.

Kevin Smith, Gunn’s co-filmmaker and comic book writer, penned a request to the Peacemaker creator about what he would like Gunn to leave out for his Superman adaptation.

After experiencing his love for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and excitement for Superman: Legacy, Smith suggested to Gunn that he should not include a giant spider fight in the third act of his upcoming DC film.

Despite Smith’s kind request, the Guardians of the Galaxy director was not easily reeled off by these demands. Gunn hilariously replied, “TWO giant spiders? Got it!”

This funny advice was a reference to Smith’s past difficulties in his attempt to make a Superman blockbuster in the early 1990s, but producer Jon Peters bought the rights to Superman from Warner Bros.

At the time, Smith was hired to write a script for Superman Lives, but Peters' demands included having Superman fight a big spider in the third act, which did not happen.

The DC boss recently shared that his Superman film will begin filming in January next year. As of now, only one role has been cast, and it’s just a minor one.

Gunn also said that he intends for Superman: Legacy to be touching and humane because Man of Steel is a symbol of kindness in a world that is opposite.

“I can’t say I’m looking for any particular emotions to bring out through 'Superman,' but I don’t want it to be unemotional. I don’t want it to deny that we are, as human beings, emotional characters and that Superman is also that.” he said.

Now that the rumored top contenders for the upcoming DC film have been revealed, fans are just beginning to get more and more excited about Gunn’s adaptation.

So far, promising names such as Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet, Jacob Elordi, and Andrew Richardson, among others, have been reportedly eyeing the next Superman.

While contenders for Lois Lane include Sex Education star Emma Mackey, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel actress Rachel Brosnahan, Bridgerton icon Phoebe Dynevor, and Scream VI fame Samara Weaving.

Superman: Legacy premieres July 11, 2025.
