In a flashback scene in X-Men '97 episode 3, we learn that Jean Grey actually had a best friend when she was 10 years old. Unfortunately, her friend met a sad fate, which traumatized Jean.

So who is Jean Grey's best friend in X-Men '97? This was revealed to be Annie Richardson.

When she was only 10 years old, Jean watched as Annie got hit by a car and died. The incident was so traumatizing for Jean Grey, which lead to her telepathic and psionic powers to be awakened.

When Annie got hit by the car, Jean experienced her best friend's emotions up until she died. It also gave Jean her first empathetic interpersonal link, which allowed her to visit the land of the dead.

Sensing Jean's strong emotions at that time, The Phoenix Force rescued her.

While Annie's death awakened Jean Grey's powers, it also left her in a psychological mess. Since she had just discovered her powers, Jean found it hard to be around others without feeling telepathically overwhelmed.

This is why she usually trapped herself in her own mind. Thankfully, Professor Charles Xavier came and helped heal her.

When she finally learned how to control her powers, Jean also accepted her best friend's death. She also promised that she would live enough for the two of them and to live her life in honor of her friend.

In the comics, it was revealed that Madelyne thought the memory was a unique experience in her childhood and not one from Jean Grey's.
