Why Are There Two Jean Greys in X-Men 97?

As of writing, X-Men 97 has not confirmed why there are two Jean Greys as the twist only unfolded in the series' second episode. We do expect episode 3 to provide some answers though.

In the closing scenes of X-Men episode 2, a second Jean Grey appears, shocking both Cyclops and the Jean we'd been following thus far.

Before the twist, we'd seen Jean's reaction to Storm's goodbye letter.

Her reaction to a second version of herself -- one that looks exhausted and desperately asks for the X-Men -- is one of surprise.

Audience members unfamiliar with the comics will likely feel the same. However, the source material does offer some answers and it looks like X-Men 97 is setting the scene for a major villain.

The Jean Grey Impostor is Madelyne Pryor, though X-Men 97 hasn't revealed very much about her yet.

In the comics, Madelyne Pryor is a clone of Jean Grey. She was created by Mister Sinister who experimented on her hoping that she would develop powerful mutant abilities.

Right now, it's hard to tell who the real Jean Grey is just by watching X-Men 97. However, fans of the comics do have theories based on the source material.

In particular, if X-Men 97 is going to be faithful to the comics, the newcomer who asks for the X-Men is the real Jean Grey who was revived.

This means that the impostor, Madelyne Pryon, has been conditioned to believe she's the real Jean.

If this is correct for the new animated series, too, it means that Cyclops has been in a romantic relationship with Madelyne, rather than with Jean. It would also mean that Madelyne is baby Nathan's mother.

In the comics, Madelyne descends to villainy when she finds out that she is not the real Jean Gray.

Hopefully, the next few episodes of X-Men 97 will reveal more about her as well as the angle the animated series will choose for Jean's clone.
