James Gunn Shares Promising Update on Superman: Legacy Casting

James Gunn’s upcoming film Superman: Legacy is set to commence the new DC Universe once it premieres on July 11, 2025. Aside from his previous updates, he said that the script is already finished and the production has entered the early stages. The filmmaker recently offered an update regarding the casting.

On Twitter, Gunn responded to a fan’s question if anyone has already caught his eye regarding the Man of Steel casting. “Yes, we have some incredible choices. I’m incredibly excited, and relieved,” replied Gunn.

The next Clark Kent has a mountain of expectations to live up to, given that he will succeed fan favorite Henry Cavill. The former Superman star's exit has been controversial following rumors that he was supposed to play the role again before he was officially fired from it.

Given that everyone is on the lookout for who will play the next Man of Steel, some fans are actually already worried about the new actor’s situation once the role has been cast, especially with many detractors lingering everywhere.

“Hoping for the new actor to be off socials. Gonna be rough.” wrote user @kath_vali. “This mob of hate from one self-obsessed side and all the conflict can hinder his performance on a character that's supposed to be a symbol of hope and happiness.”

Meanwhile, @Dibbik_ said: “This casting needs to be perfect. If they mess up this casting then Gunn’s new DCU will basically be dead on arrival. Wishing for the best.”

“Some people are gonna be unhappy with the casting and see it as anything but perfect no matter what because he won't be Cavill. So I wouldn't use people’s response to it as a metric for the movie’s success. I'm not worried though, the casting director they got has a pretty good record.” argued @ImthatHarrison.

On the other hand, aside from the titular hero, Gunn already confirmed that the DC film will see the return of Superman’s best friend, Jimmy Olsen. Superman: Legacy is expected to showcase The Last Son of Krypton's early years.
