Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt has recently revealed that there is a possibility that Vol. 3 will be a prequel to Infinity War, but director James Gunn himself has confirmed that the timeline of the third Guardians movie will happen after Thanos' invasion.
When asked by a fan on Twitter when Vol. 3 will take place, Gunn confirmed:
If Vol. 3 were to be a prequel, I wouldn't be too surprised. Vol. 2 actually takes place only a few months after the first Guardians movie, and maybe a prequel could give us some backstory on Peter Quill and Gamora's romance. Not to mention, it's possible that Ant-Man and the Wasp is also a prequel, so we can surmise that not all the movies will be taking place in real-time.
I think the problem with prequels is that it's hard for the film to keep us in suspense about a character's fate, since their fate is already something we know. With Vol. 3 taking place after Infinity War, we get to delve more into character development. My guess is that the film will end with a new iteration of the Guardians roster.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to come out in 2020.
