Is Kraven the Hunter Stronger Than Spider-Man? Exploring Comics History for Answers

Yes, Kraven the Hunter is stronger than Spider-Man, at least based on Marvel’s official strength power ratings (Kraven’s is at 6, Spidey’s at 4).

But the more important question you should be asking is: Can Kraven the Hunter defeat the Wall Crawler?

In this post, we will take a deep dive into comics history to get some answers. Along the way, we are going to examine Kraven the Hunter’s origins, powers, and abilities to find out how this character has remained one of Spidey’s most enduring foes.

Kraven the Hunter’s real name is Sergei Kravinoff. He is a Russian supervillain who made his comics debut in The Amazing Spider-Man issue #15 in 1964.

Kraven the Hunter acquired his name because of his worldwide reputation as a big-game hunter. And he’s not just an ordinary game hunter. He does away with using firearms or bows and arrows, preferring instead to use his bare hands.

Created just a couple of years after Spider-Man debuted in Marvel comics, Kraven the Hunter is considered by many as one of the Web-Slinger’s greatest enemies.

As a founding member of the evil supergroup Sinister Six, Kravinoff is not just a notable Spider-Man villain, but also a bad guy who has caused lots of trouble for other Marvel characters like Black Panther, Venom (more on their battles later, we promise), and even the X-Men.

Kraven the Hunter possesses superhuman physical abilities. He has enhanced speed – he can sprint up to 60 miles per hour for short stretches. He is also stronger than normal athletes (he can lift up to two tons). Moreover, he has a running vertical jump of about 20 feet.

Kravinoff got his powers by continuously ingesting a potion he concocted from mysterious jungle herbs.

Apart from his herb-empowered physical prowess (which is akin to that of an Olympic-level athlete), he also has heightened senses (sight, smell, and hearing), which he puts to good use when tracking and hunting a target.

Outside of his elevated physical abilities, senses, and tracking skills, Kraven is a master hand-to-hand combatant and tactician.

Is Kraven the Hunter a Mutant?

Kraven the Hunter has powers mere mortals can only dream of – but is he a mutant?

No, Kraven the Hunter is not a mutant. Well, at least not according to Marvel’s definition of a mutant, i.e., classified as a Homo sapiens superior on account of being born with the X-gene.

His physical abilities, however, were the result of mutagenic properties present in the herbal potion he frequently ingests. He’s a human mutate, yes – but he’s no mutant.

Nope, he’s not a mutant, but he sure does love hunting mutants, such as Hank McCoy, aka Beast, from the X-Men.

But he did have several run-ins with some of Marvel’s most popular mutant characters. In the X-Men/Spider-Man crossover saga in the late 2000s, for instance, he did work for Mister Sinister and acquired DNA samples from Cyclops, Angel, Beast, and Iceman (after wounding each in battle).

Interestingly, Kravinoff went on to father a mutant child. His illegitimate son, Alyosha, appears to have inherited Kraven’s physical abilities, as well as tracking skills.

Is Kraven the Hunter Immortal?

Kraven the Hunter rises from the grave.

Yes, Kraven the Hunter is immortal, or more accurately, was immortal. Well, sort of – it’s a complicated story. So allow us to explain.

In 1987, the Kraven’s Last Hunt arc was told through The Amazing Spider-Man comics. This saga was supposed to tell the final battle between the Wall Crawler and the Unhuntable Sergei.

In the story, Kraven is getting old and his health is starting to fail him. He vows to defeat Spidey once and for all, and then end his life after completing his “last hunt.” Quite incredibly, he accomplishes his final mission. Then true to his word, he commits suicide (but don’t worry, Spider-Man fans, the Web-Slinger survives the saga).

But then fast-forward to 2009, a follow-up to the saga is released by Marvel. Last Hunt’s story continues through The Gauntlet and Grim Hunt storylines, which see Kraven getting resurrected through an elaborate ritual involving Spider-Man’s blood.

Unfortunately, they got the wrong blood! It wasn’t Peter Parker’s – it was from Kaine, Parker’s clone. Kraven still rises from his grave, but he’s now cursed as an undead person. So basically he can’t die, unless at the hands of Spider-Man.

Strangely enough, the curse appeared to have been lifted when Kraven was killed and revived immediately after by Kaine.

Can Kraven Beat Spider-Man?

Yes, Kraven can beat Spider-Man, and he has. In the Kraven’s Last Hunt saga we mentioned earlier, the Russian bad guy makes good on his promise to beat Spidey.

Interestingly, Kravinoff then decides to spare Peter Parker and instead bury the superhero alive.

And in a truly sick twist, Kraven the Hunter proceeds to rub it in by donning a Spider-Man suit and beating up criminals in New York City. He did this to prove a point – that he’s better than Spider-Man.

Looking back through the decades, there’s rich history between the two characters. Suffice it to say that Kraven has come close more than once.

He once paralyzed the Web-Head by shooting magnetizing rays from his harness. But alas, a distraction allows Spidey to live another day.

Can Kraven Beat Venom?

Yes, Kraven can beat Venom. Back in 2011, the Hunter met the Symbiote in Savage Land and it wasn’t a friendly encounter.

Kravinoff (and his family) had escaped to Savage Land after losing to Spider-Man during the events of the Grim Hunt saga. When Venom (the Flash Thompson version, not Eddie Brock) pays a visit, he gets mistaken as the Web-Slinger by Kraven.

Granted, Kraven is operating on his home turf, so it’s hardly a surprise that he was winning the battle. Venom only manages to survive because their fight gets interrupted by a giant bat.

More recently, the two would fight again in 2017, but this time, it’s Eddie Brock who gets to have the hunted-by-Kraven experience. Early in the fight, Kraven was able to wound Venom.

During the rematch, Venom comes out on top, but only because he goes on a berserker state a la Wolverine.

The two are actually evenly matched. Venom may be a superpowered monster from outer space, but Kraven’s got physical abilities too, not to mention the smarts. If you ask me, it’s a coin toss. But that’s just me.
